Fashion Tips Latest Beauty Trends Accessories

Should your bag match your shoes? How can a well-chosen scarf or necklace highlight your best features? And how much is too much when it comes to fashion extras? We asked the experts for their top tips for spring accessories.

1. Start small
So you just don't think of yourself as a 'jewellery person'? A well-chosen piece can really lift an outfit, so it pays to start experimenting. 'If you're an accessories novice, buy a piece of jewellery in a base metal - gold or silver - and see how it looks with different outfits,' says personal stylist Lisa Talbot (www.lisatalbot.co.uk). 'This is a great way to start injecting jewellery into your wardrobe. You can build your collection as you become more confident.'

2. Know the score
Concerned you'll end up looking like a Christmas tree if you overdo it with the extras? 'In fact, the majority of UK women don't wear enough accessories,' insists image consultant Gail Morgan (www.studyinstyletraining.com). 'To help you keep tabs, an old trick is to award yourself "accessories points". Score one point for each earring, necklace, bracelet, watch, ring, scarf, patterned or coloured shoe, tights, scarf, belt, handbag or glasses. You should score at least five points for each outfit - but more than 15 points is excessive.'

3. Remember, size matters...

Always be mindful of your shape and stature when choosing accessories. Some pointers? Personal colour and style expert Jules Standish (www.colourconsultancy.co.uk) advises: 'If you're tall, you can indulge in big statement jewellery, but shorter women should opt for more delicate pieces. Likewise, a large bag in a jewel-bright colour works well for tall women - but if you're more petite, look for smaller styles. Don't let the bag wear you!'

4. Don't make it all about the shoes
Yes, we've all been guilty of falling head-over-heels in love with a pair of gorgeous shoes from time to time. But do try to bear in mind how they'll work with the rest of your outfit, and resist the temptation to wear them at every possibly opportunity. 'This is particularly important in the workplace,' warns Gail Morgan. 'If your shoes are too high, brightly coloured or patterned, people will only look at your feet!'

5. Know when to match - and when not to match
It's that age-old dilemma: should your accessories match? 'In most situations, matching your bag to your shoes or similar is a tad OTT,' warns Gail Morgan. 'But with this season's trend of wearing one strong colour from head to toe, matching accessories can make a statement at a big event. If you're going to a wedding, for instance, you normally have three main extras to deal with: hat, bag and shoes. My advice? Match the colour on two of these items, but keep the third slightly different. So you might go for a neutral or nude pair of shoes, then add a contrasting colour such as pink or red for your bag and hat.'

6. Know your colours
Obviously, you can give a nod to a current trend with your accessories - but just because, say, lemon yellow is hot this season, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the shade for you. So choose wisely! 'Women who wear dark or neutral colours can give themselves an instant facelift and look years younger by adding a coloured accessory,' insists Jules Standish. 'Worn up against the skin, the right shades can even out the complexion and bring out your natural skin tone - making it appear younger and healthier. Warm skin tones suit gold teamed with amber, greens or red; pinker skins suit all shades of blue, purple and pink.'

7. Make your scarf work for you
Choosing the perfect scarf to compliment your outfit is only half the battle: how you wear it matters, too. 'A coloured scarf can be very slimming when worn with a darker tone because it automatically draws the eye away from "negative" areas,' says Jules Standish. 'Women with long long necks can wrap their scarves around their necks - but if you want to elongate a short neck, leave it hanging loose and long. Choose silk for smart, workplace and evening wear; linen or wool/cashmere for a more casual look.'

8. Ensure your accessories work at work
Remember, your accessories can ensure you make the right impression in the workplace, too. 'Why do you think men wear ties?' points out Gail Morgan. 'Well-chosen extras convey a sense of style and indicate that you take care of yourself. Fantastic shoes and bags that are clean and in neutral colours lend an air of professionalism.' Gail's tips? 'A simple, stylish necklace with a largish pendant will draw attention to your face when you're speaking. And if you have short hair, always wear earrings because they add balance.'

9. Go beyond the obvious
It can be tempting to wear your favourite accessories - particularly jewellery - day in, day out. But experimenting with different items and styles can bring your look bang up-to-date with the minimum of effort. Jules Standish suggests: 'Leave your usual necklace in the jewellery box and try one of this season's detachable collars instead. If you're wearing a plain shirt or jumper, look for one embellished with jewels, crystals or beads. Or simply opt for one in a bright colour to make your complexion look wonderfully healthy.'

10. Plan ahead
You know the feeling, you're supposed to have left home five minutes ago but you're still gawping into your jewellery box or staring at a drawer full of scarves, wondering what to wear. 'A great tip is to hang your accessories on the same hanger of a garment you like wearing them with,' says Lisa Talbot. 'Or you could hang all your accessories on the back of your wardrobe door, so they're ready and waiting when you're in a hurry. Style should be fun, not hard work - so the most important thing is to let your personality shine through.'
